This article covers:

  • What you can change after an automation is created

  • How to open an automation for editing

  • When your changes take effect

  • What you cannot change

In short

You can edit every step of an automation after you create it: the audience criteria, the goal, the settings, and the destinations. Select the pencil icon on the Automations home screen or on the automation's management screen. Changes apply from the next run onward. Past runs keep the setup they ran with, including their goal.

What you can edit

Step

What you can change

When it takes effect

Audience criteria

Add, remove, or change the filters that decide which fans qualify. For example, add a price code once it is confirmed.

From the next run

Goal

The goal category and goal filters, such as season, product, event, or price code.

From the next run. Earlier runs are still measured against the goal they ran with.

Settings

Every setting: name, description, automation period, time zone, cadence, segment tracking period, and control group.

From the next run. The start date cannot be set in the past.

Destinations

Add, remove, or change where segments are pushed, including Braze campaign and Canvas mappings.

From the next run. Segments created before the change are not pushed to a new destination.

Note: The performance dashboard shows the goal each run was created with, and adds up results across runs. Changing the goal does not change how earlier runs are measured.

How to edit an automation

  1. From the Segmentation menu, select Automations.

  2. Find the automation and select the pencil icon. You can also open the automation and select the pencil icon on its management screen.

  3. Go to the step you want to change. If you are editing audience criteria, the Segment Builder opens with the current filters already loaded.

  4. Make your changes, then select Update Automation.

  5. If the automation is active, confirm the message telling you changes apply from the next run.

Tip: If you do not want the automation to run while you work out your changes, pause it first, then unpause it when you are done. See Pause or unpause an automation.

When your changes take effect

  • Changes apply from the next scheduled run. A run already in progress finishes with the old setup.

  • Segments the automation has already created are not changed or re-sent.

  • Run history is kept. Editing does not reset or remove past runs.

  • Editing one step leaves the others as they were. For example, changing the audience criteria does not change the goal, destinations, control group, or tracking period.

What you cannot change

  • The trigger type. You cannot switch an automation between time-based and event-based. Create a new automation with the trigger type you want.

  • A start date in the past. You can move the start date forward, but not back before today.

Tip: You do not need every season detail before you set up an automation. Create it with what you know, then come back and refine the audience criteria once pack pricing or price codes are confirmed.

FAQ

Will editing an automation reset its run history?
No. Past runs and the segments they created are kept.

If I change the goal, what happens to my past results?
Nothing. Each run is measured against the goal it was created with. New runs use the new goal, and the performance dashboard adds up results across all runs.

If I add a destination, are earlier segments sent to it?
No. The new destination receives segments from the next run onward.

Can I change a time-based automation to event-based?
No. Create a new automation with the trigger type you want.

Can I update my Braze campaign or Canvas mapping?
Yes. Edit the destinations step and update the mapping. The new mapping is used from the next run.

What happens if I edit an automation while it is running?
The current run finishes with the old setup. Your changes apply from the next run.

Can I edit a paused automation?
Yes. Your changes apply from the first run after you unpause it.
