This article covers:

  • Every automation play available today, with what each one targets

  • Recommended timing for each play

  • How to choose between plays that look similar

  • Where to go to actually set one up

In short

A play is a pre-built audience definition that can be used as is or edited built for a common use case. The play gives you the targeting. You choose the schedule, the goal and the destination.

How to read this list

The picker lists every play together. The icon on each card tells you which kind it is: a clock for time-based, a calendar for event-based.

  • Time-based plays run on a repeating cadence you set, such as weekly. Use them for ongoing lead flow and service work that is not tied to a specific game.

  • Event-based plays run relative to each game in your schedule. Their targeting also narrows to the trigger event, which is the game that started the run.

Important: The recommended timing below is guidance, not a setting the play arrives with. Nothing is pre-filled, so you set the cadence or trigger timing on every play you start.

For how automations run, how child segments work, and what to do when a run fails, see How automations run.

Choosing between plays that look similar

Several plays sit close together. These are the distinctions worth knowing.

First Known Attendees, or First Time Attending This Season?
First Known Attendees means the fan's first game ever, as far as your data goes back. First Time Attending This Season means their first game this season, even if they have attended in past seasons. Pick the first for true newcomers and the second for fans you are winning back into the habit.

Pre-game, or post-game?
Pre-game plays reach fans before they arrive, so use them for what to expect on the day. Post-game plays reach fans afterwards, so use them to convert a good first experience into a second visit. The two First Known Attendees plays and the two First Time Attending This Season plays are not alternatives. Many teams run both halves of a pair.

Last-Minute Single Game Buyers, or the Day Type version?
The plain version looks at fans who buy within 3 days of any game. The Day Type version widens to 5 days and matches on the day type of the trigger event, either weekday or weekend. Use the Day Type version when your weekday and weekend crowds behave differently.

Past Opponent Buyers, or Past Day of Week Type Buyer?
Both look at what a fan bought before. Opponent matches on who you are playing. Day of week type matches on when you are playing. Pick whichever your fans respond to more.

Time-based, or event-based, for the three plays in both lists?
The event-based version adds a filter for the trigger event, so it reaches a narrower group tied to one game. The time-based version works your whole base on a cycle.

Before you start one

  • A play is a starting point. You can adjust its targeting before you save.

  • Nothing is pre-set. You choose the cadence or trigger timing, the goal, the automation period and the destination.

  • You can use the same play as often as you like. Start one automation per destination, or several with different timing, all from the same play.

  • Each play needs a destination, and you still build the campaign in that tool.

  • An event-based run that fails cannot be re-run, so give game day plays enough lead time to spot a problem.

FAQ

Can I change what a play targets?
Yes. The play fills in the targeting and you can edit any of it before you save.

Can I use the same play more than once?
Yes. There is no limit, so you can run several automations from one play with different timing, destinations or tweaks to the targeting.

Does a play come with its timing already set?
No. The timing in this article is a recommendation. You set the cadence or trigger timing yourself on every automation you create.

Why does the same play name appear twice?
Three plays come in a time-based and an event-based version. The event-based version narrows to the trigger event. Read the description on the card to tell them apart.

Are more plays coming?
More are in development. Only the plays listed here are available today.

Do I have to use a play?
No. Choose Custom Automation to build targeting from scratch.
